The Meatrix

It is crazy to think that the food industries are allowed to use images of family farms when in reality the animals are raised in huge factory farms that are nothing like a small family farm. Even if you don’t care about the poor quality of life that the animals have it is impossible to ignore the fact that the way they are raised results in health hazards to people. Everything from the antibiotics that the animals are given to keep them alive to the way that slaughter houses are ran creates a risk that could adversely affect the health of anyone who eats the meat. It is unreasonable to think that the traditional small family farms would be able to produce enough food to feed the entire population there is no reason why things should be done the way that they are now. The animals have a poor quality of life and in turn a poor quality of food is produced. I think that it is the consumers responsibility to not support companies that use the methods described in the videos and they will be forced to change the way they treat the animals.

  1. I absolutely agree. It seems strange that the very government that we expect to protect us allows these food industries to essentially lie to us about the way their foods are produced. The pictures displayed on their packaging labels are far from the real picture. You also make a good point that some consumers don't really care about the inhumane treatment of animals, but they should most certainly be rattled by such a large threat to human health. In my studies on factory farming, I found that scientists have been working on the biomanufacturing of meat. In this process, cells from meat-producing animals are extracted (in a simple, painless process) and cultured in lab to produce a slab of meat. Simple meat products have been manufactured in this manner before, but are not quite to the point of being edible due to the experimental environment in which they were made. So far this seems to be the most satisfactory solution for everyone involved: meat eaters still get to eat meat, animals don't have to be harmed, and the animals' innate rights to life and contentment are realized.

  2. I definitely agree with everything you have said. It cannot be healthy for the humans that eat the food that comes out of these factory farms. All of the antibiotics that they're given cannot have positive effects in our bodies. It is also quite depressing to see the living conditions of these animals. One of the videos that I watched talked about how most of the animals couldn't even turn around. I can't even imagine that. Overall, it just seems as though we need to convince Americans that factory farming is not as beneficial as it seems in order to help restore some of the farms that were previously family owned.
